Stress-Strain Curve

Engineering stress vs strain with key points marked

Key Formulas
Stress σ = F / A₀
Strain ε = ΔL / L₀
% Elongation = (L_f - L₀)/L₀ × 100
% Reduction = (A₀ - A_f)/A₀ × 100

Material Property Guidelines

Typical Values

Steel: E ≈ 200 GPa, Yield 250–600 MPa

Aluminum: E ≈ 70 GPa, Yield 100–300 MPa

Copper: E ≈ 110 GPa, ductile

Ductility

Brittle: < 5% elongation

Ductile: > 15% elongation

Highly ductile: > 30%
